Xerjoff 40 Knots has a name, bottle and story that immediately make you think of the sea. Yacht clubs, Mediterranean water, salty air and sunshine — even Xerjoff builds the fragrance around that world.

But here’s the problem: 40 Knots doesn’t smell aquatic to us.

What we experience is something much more interesting. There is freshness, certainly, and a subtle suggestion of citrus in the opening, but underneath it sits an unexpected depth — almost oriental in character. To our nose, there is even something reminiscent of frankincense, despite Xerjoff deliberately keeping the official notes of 40 Knots secret.

Then there is the sheer presence of it. 40 Knots projects enormously, leaves a serious scent trail and has that rare ability to make you feel as though you’re wearing something genuinely expensive without simply smelling loud.

To us, 40 Knots isn’t the smell of the sea. It’s the smell of daylight luxury.

The First Spray

40 Knots doesn’t open with the kind of sparkling citrus freshness we associate with conventional summer fragrances.

There is a hint of citrus, but almost immediately it feels as though something heavier is sitting underneath it. The opening has depth, warmth and an almost resinous quality that gives the freshness an unexpectedly oriental character.

To our nose, there is even something frankincense-like running through it. Xerjoff doesn’t disclose the individual notes, so we’re not suggesting frankincense is actually part of the formula — it is simply what the fragrance evokes for us.

But the first thing you’re really going to notice is the power.

40 Knots fills the space around you. Its projection is enormous, the scent trail is unmistakable and, during those opening hours, you can leave the room while the fragrance seems to stay behind.

Yet somehow, it doesn’t smell like a fragrance that is merely trying to be loud. There is a quality and polish underneath all that power that immediately makes it feel expensive.

This isn’t generic freshness turned up to maximum volume. It smells like luxury with the volume turned up.

The Drydown: Where 40 Knots Becomes Special

The drydown is where 40 Knots really becomes a masterpiece for us.

The force of the opening gradually softens and something smoother begins to emerge. We experience a beautiful creamy, almost powdery quality that feels considerably calmer than those first explosive hours.

But what’s fascinating is that the fragrance hasn’t suddenly become weak.

There seems to be a difference between how 40 Knots announces itself to everyone around you and what you actually smell close to your own skin. In the air, it continues to have enormous presence. Up close, the fragrance feels smoother, creamier and much more composed.

That progression is one of our favourite things about it. The volume changes. The texture changes. But the fragrance never loses the distinctive character that made the opening so memorable.

And while we wouldn’t describe 40 Knots as an obvious compliment magnet, it creates something we arguably enjoy more: someone nearby wondering “What smells so good?” because they can’t immediately identify what they’re smelling.

40 Knots doesn’t become quieter by becoming ordinary. It becomes quieter by becoming more refined.

Performance & Longevity

40 Knots performs at the level its opening promises.

On our skin, we comfortably get 8+ hours, while on clothing it remains noticeable for 10 hours or longer.

The first three hours are the most dramatic. Projection and sillage are massive, creating a substantial scent trail that follows you through a space — and can remain noticeable even after you’ve moved on.

After those opening hours, 40 Knots gradually pulls closer. But this isn’t the point where performance disappears. Instead, it develops into a generous scent bubble that we continue to notice for around six hours, allowing the creamier and powderier side of the fragrance to become more prominent.

Because of that power, we adjust our sprays according to the weather and occasion. We generally use somewhere between two and six sprays, with considerably more restraint when the temperature rises.

40 Knots doesn’t need overspraying to make an impression. Give it enough space and it will do the work itself.

When Would We Wear 40 Knots?

Despite all the Mediterranean and yacht-club imagery surrounding 40 Knots, we don’t see it as a fragrance that needs to wait for a summer holiday.

For us, 40 Knots is a daylight fragrance rather than a seasonal one.

Think of a luxury holiday, a special tennis event, an elegant sporting occasion, a gentlemen’s club or an important family gathering during the day. It works when the setting feels polished but not necessarily formal.

And surprisingly, we enjoy it in winter too. There is enough depth underneath the freshness for 40 Knots to retain its character when the temperature drops. That makes it one of those rare fragrances we could genuinely reach for throughout the year.

What matters more is choosing the occasion. We wouldn’t necessarily save it for a candlelit dinner or make it our automatic everyday fragrance. We’d rather keep it for those days when we want wearing fragrance itself to feel special.

That has another advantage: a bottle can last a very long time.

40 Knots isn’t summer in a bottle to us. It’s special-occasion daylight in a bottle.

Who Does 40 Knots Suit?

When we describe 40 Knots as smelling like a “wealthy man’s fresh fragrance,” we aren’t really talking about money.

We’re talking about presence.

We picture a confident working man in his 30s, 40s or 50s — someone with charisma who takes care over how he presents himself. The specific outfit doesn’t particularly matter. He might be wearing tailoring, a polo shirt on holiday or something relaxed for a family gathering. What matters is that he looks considered for the occasion.

40 Knots fits naturally into that picture because it doesn’t feel youthful or trend-driven, nor does it feel old-fashioned. It has a sense of maturity without becoming serious or conservative.

And crucially, this isn’t a fragrance we would choose because we want everyone around us to approve of it.

40 Knots doesn’t create confidence. It feels like an extension of confidence that is already there.

Is Xerjoff 40 Knots Worth the Price?

There is no avoiding the obvious weakness: 40 Knots is expensive.

We would absolutely look for a reputable retailer offering a discount rather than assuming full retail is the only way to buy it. But unusually for a fragrance at this level, the price doesn’t leave us feeling that the experience fails to justify the expense.

If you’ve already decided that you want to spend serious money on one special men’s fragrance, 40 Knots is one of the bottles we’d genuinely recommend considering.

The reason isn’t simply performance. Plenty of fragrances are powerful. What we’re paying for here is the combination of performance, quality and — most importantly — a smell that feels genuinely difficult to replace.

There is a catch. 40 Knots isn’t particularly mass appealing, and we wouldn’t buy it expecting an endless stream of compliments.

But as our interest in fragrance has developed, that matters less to us. Fragrance becomes much more interesting when you stop asking “Will everybody like this?” and start asking “Do I genuinely love smelling this on myself?”

For us, the answer with 40 Knots is yes.

It’s expensive. Look for a good price. But if we were spending serious money on fragrance, this is exactly the kind of perfume we’d want that money to buy.

An Unexpected Comparison: Amouage Existence

There is one slightly strange association we kept returning to while wearing 40 Knots: Amouage Existence.

We aren’t suggesting these fragrances smell alike. Their identities are very different, and we certainly wouldn’t describe one as an alternative to the other.

But something about the depth of 40 Knots occasionally takes our nose in the same direction. Perhaps it is that almost incense-like, resinous sensation we perceive underneath the freshness — the same quality that made us think of frankincense from the opening.

It’s difficult to pinpoint, and that’s precisely why we find the association interesting. Sometimes two fragrances can share almost nothing obvious on paper yet create a strangely familiar feeling when worn.

40 Knots and Existence aren’t twins. They don’t even feel like siblings. But somewhere in the background, our nose seems convinced they’re acquainted.

The Amber & Olive Verdict

Xerjoff 40 Knots is one of the easiest 10/10 ratings we’ve given — not because it’s perfect for everyone, but because it does something we increasingly value in fragrance: it feels genuinely difficult to replace.

The opening is powerful, fresh without being conventionally fresh, and carries an unexpected depth that almost feels oriental to our nose. Then comes that beautiful transition into something creamier and powderier, while the enormous projection gradually becomes a more refined scent bubble.

Performance is exceptional. Quality is obvious. But uniqueness is what ultimately wins us over.

Don’t buy 40 Knots because you want the safest expensive fragrance in the room. It isn’t particularly mass appealing, and there are easier choices if collecting compliments is the objective.

Buy it because you’ve smelled it, worn it properly and discovered that nothing else in your collection gives you quite the same feeling.

Yes, it’s expensive. We’d still look for a reputable discount. But if someone told us they had the budget for one genuinely special men’s fragrance and wanted our recommendation, 40 Knots would be very high on the list.

Our verdict: 10/10 — unique, luxurious, enormously capable and one of our must-have men’s fragrances.

The yacht may be part of the story. For us, though, 40 Knots smells less like being at sea and more like being exactly where you want to be.

What Are the Notes in Xerjoff 40 Knots?

Xerjoff does something unusual with its Join The Club collection: the individual ingredients are deliberately kept secret. The house officially places 40 Knots in the woody and oriental olfactory family rather than publishing a conventional top, heart and base note pyramid.

That makes our impressions throughout this review — the hint of citrus, the frankincense-like depth and the creamy, powdery drydown — exactly that: our own experience of smelling the fragrance, not a list of claimed ingredients.

Our review: Xerjoff 40 Knots was worn and tested on skin before writing this review. All impressions, including scent character, longevity, projection and performance, reflect our own experience. Xerjoff does not disclose the individual fragrance notes for 40 Knots.
