Amouage Search is not a fragrance we would judge from a testing strip — or even from the first few minutes on skin.
The opening hits hard. There is citrus, certainly, but not the familiar bright lemon found in countless fresh fragrances. It feels deeper, smokier and slightly mysterious. On our first encounter, it was unfamiliar enough that we could easily understand someone deciding they disliked it before giving it a proper chance.
But Search needs time.
Wear it alone, let the opening settle, and something begins to make sense. The smoke, citrus, resin and woods come together into a fragrance that feels remarkably self-assured. It doesn’t seem particularly interested in being immediately likeable.
Search smells like someone saying: I know who I am, and I know why I’m wearing this.

The First Spray
Search makes an unusually forceful first impression. The citrus hits immediately, but describing it simply as “lemony” doesn’t quite capture it. This isn’t the sparkling, juicy citrus opening we have come to expect from fresh fragrances.
There is weight behind the lemon. Smoke seems to sit underneath it almost immediately, giving the opening a darker, more mysterious quality. It is fresh, but not conventionally fresh.
And that is probably Search’s biggest danger.
Smell it quickly alongside several other fragrances and it would be very easy to dismiss it. The opening can feel strange enough that you form an opinion before the fragrance has had any opportunity to show you what it is trying to do.
Our advice: don’t test Search against five other perfumes. Wear it by itself and give it time.
When Search Starts to Make Sense
Give Search half an hour and the fragrance begins to explain itself.
The initial citrus loses some of its aggression and the composition starts coming together. The resinous character becomes clearer, the frankincense begins to emerge and underneath it there is a strong woody, earthy quality.
But this isn’t the heavy, dark frankincense we normally associate with cold-weather fragrances. Search somehow manages to feel airy and dark at the same time.
It reminds us less of smoke inside a dark room and more of being outdoors somewhere along the Arabian landscape — mountains, stone, vegetation and the coast on a warm, slightly rainy day. There is darkness in the atmosphere, but there is still air and light around it.
That’s what makes Search so unusual. It gives us some of the depth and satisfaction we normally look for in a winter fragrance, while still feeling completely at home in spring and warm weather.
It feels like wearing a winter fragrance in summer — except it was made for summer.
Wearing Search to Work
Search makes the most sense to us early in the day. It is the kind of fragrance that becomes part of getting ready for work: shower, clothes, watch, fragrance — then out the door.
There is something naturally professional about it. We can imagine it working particularly well for meetings, formal office environments, banking, business or even a consultant walking into clinic. It has presence without feeling as though you are trying to dominate the room.
For the first couple of hours, Search creates a strong but controlled scent bubble around you. You know it is there and other people will notice it, but it never feels unnecessarily disruptive in a working environment.
We wouldn’t describe it as an obvious choice for a casual gathering or a night out with friends. You could certainly wear it there, but that misses some of what makes Search special.
This isn’t really a fragrance for collecting compliments. It is a fragrance for building your own sense of charisma.
And throughout the day, you keep catching little whiffs of it. Once you have grown to love the scent, those moments can genuinely make you stop for a second and appreciate what you are wearing.
Performance & Longevity
Search performs strongly without becoming overwhelming.
For roughly the first two hours, projection is noticeable and creates a clear scent bubble around the wearer. What we particularly like is that the strength feels controlled — it has presence, but doesn’t constantly announce itself to everyone around you.
On our skin, we get around six hours of wear, while on clothing we can still detect it at around the 10-hour mark. As the fragrance develops, it gradually moves closer rather than continuing to radiate heavily.
For the occasions where we think Search works best — work, meetings and professional daytime wear — that’s actually exactly how we want it to perform.
Strong enough to give you presence. Controlled enough to wear around other people.
Search in a British Summer
Living in the UK, we think Search has found almost perfect weather for itself.
Not scorching heat. Not cold either. Think of a comfortable British summer morning: mild warmth, grey skies threatening a little rain, perhaps some sun later in the day. You’re dressed for work and heading out — driving, walking, cycling or taking the train or Tube.
This is where Search feels completely at home.
The citrus keeps it airy enough for warmer weather, while the frankincense, resin and woods give it a depth that many conventional summer fragrances simply don’t have. There is something distinctly Middle Eastern running through it — smoky, woody and slightly earthy — but presented in a remarkably refined way.
For a man who already knows how he likes to dress, has his own morning rituals and wants his fragrance to feel like part of that identity, Search makes enormous sense. It is calm but strong, distinctive without being disruptive, and confident without demanding attention.
It doesn’t make the man. It feels like the finishing touch on a man who already knows who he is.
Is Amouage Search Worth the Price?
This is where our enthusiasm for Search needs a little perspective.
We love the fragrance, but at this level of pricing, loving something isn’t automatically enough to recommend buying a full bottle.
If the cost is comfortably within your budget and Search becomes your smell, we can absolutely understand owning it as a signature fragrance. It is distinctive enough that we struggle to think of another perfume that recreates quite the same combination of citrus, frankincense, woods and airy darkness.
But if buying a bottle requires stretching your budget, we wouldn’t do it. There are plenty of excellent fragrances available for considerably less, and at this price we would rather save our money for something that completely blows us away.
That’s why we strongly recommend starting with a 3–5ml decant. Don’t make your decision from one spray in a shop. Wear it properly for several days — ideally for a full working week.
Spray it after getting ready in the morning. Go to work. Sit through meetings. Catch it on yourself throughout the day.
If Search consistently makes you feel happier, stronger and more charismatic when you put it on, then the full bottle starts to make sense.
The Amber & Olive Verdict
Amouage Search is one of those fragrances that reminds us why first impressions can be misleading.
Judge it from the opening alone and we could easily understand giving it an average rating. The citrus is unusual, the smoke arrives early and the whole composition can initially feel unfamiliar.
Give it time, however, and Search becomes something else entirely.
The citrus, frankincense, resin, woods and earthiness settle into a fragrance that feels distinctive, composed and remarkably confident. It has darkness without heaviness, freshness without smelling conventionally fresh, and strength without needing to fill every room you enter.
Most importantly, Search becomes personal. This isn’t a fragrance we’d recommend because it attracts endless compliments. It is the kind of fragrance you begin looking forward to wearing — part of getting dressed, going to work and feeling ready for the day.
The price prevents us from calling it an automatic purchase. Sample it first. Buy a 3–5ml decant, wear it alone for several days and allow yourself to get beyond that challenging opening.
Because if Search clicks with you the way it did with us, something interesting happens: the fragrance that could initially have received a fairly ordinary score becomes very difficult to replace.
Our verdict: 10/10 for the scent once you understand it — but sample before you spend.
earch isn’t for everyone. But for the person it suits, it has everything needed to become a signature.
